A Bold New Chapter for Disability Employment
As Australia gears up for a transformational leap in disability employment services, Inclusive Employment Australia (IEA) is poised to replace the long-standing Disability Employment Services (DES) from 1 November 2025. The Albanese Government has committed $5.5 billion to this reform, with 84 provider organisations receiving funding offers – including an extra $227.6 million over five years to support an additional 15,000 Australians with disability each year.
IEA fundamentally shifts the model – placing participants firmly at the centre by offering tailored, flexible support and removing arbitrary restrictions such as the previous 2‑year time limit. Expanded eligibility now includes individuals with an assessed work capacity of less than eight hours per week, as well as voluntary participants not receiving Centrelink.
IEA will also deliver:
- A greater diversity of specialist providers, better equipped to meet individual needs, including those related to autism, psychosocial disability, and acquired brain injury.
- Stronger accountability mechanisms to ensure quality and sustainability of outcomes, with underperforming providers subject to funding adjustments.
- Enhanced employer support, including streamlined wage subsidies up to $10,000 and reduced red tape to foster inclusive hiring practices.
- The newly established Centre for Inclusive Employment, backed by a $22.1 million investment, to promote best practice and build sector-wide capability.
